This is the last log cabin in the world. The woman is widowed, & lives with her three sons. By day they gather wood, their nights are long, & full of fire & smoke. One day the woman receives a telegram from the city. The telegram says, “Your sons are now the only children left uncounted. As is customary, please begin to insert the helium.” The woman throws the telegram into the fire, & says, “Never”. The next day, light arrives late. She says, “Over my dead body,” as she attaches the tube to the canister. “I shall never surrender,” she says, as she fills each boy with helium. The boys hold hands, & unmoor their tenures. She watches them float above the trees & the log cabin, headed for the great mirage. “Damn that city,” she says, as the grass around her feet leans west.
